Commerce is the great civilizer. We exchange ideas when we exchange fabrics.
—R. G. Ingersoll

When I started freelancing full time, I got more rejections (or just plain silence) than assignments. I almost quit, but my writer friends' encouragement helped put me back on track. Hoping to take control of my creative life and build a cheerleading squad for other writers, I created Bylines Writer's Desk Calendar where emerging and established authors wrote about why and how and when they write. I published Bylines for two years then, happy irony, I got too many assignments to continue. Another freelancer has handsomely taken over (www.bylinescalendar.com).
Bylines CalendarThis is a beautiful package - great layout, clever cover. Even more important, the variety of entries from writers is remarkable; there are so many interesting and inspiring stories that combine to provide a real sense of community.

Lord, but writing is a grungy, lonely business. For many writers, days are spent wrestling with that little voice that keens "you suck you suck you suck you suck.' That's why Bylines is such a cool thing.
